Jim has represented Michigan Gun Owners in cases such as Michigan Gun Owners v Capital Area District Library, and Michigan Gun Oweners v. Ann Arbor Public Schools.  He has also handled open carry criminal cases such as People v Combs and other civil litigation regarding firearms rights. Jim has defended cases including felony firearm and defense-related fatal shooting cases, cases involving brandishing as a form of self-defense, as well as many "road rage" self-defense cases. Jim is a Life Member of the NRA, and is a referral attorney for various self-defense insurance programs. Mr. Makowski is the lead attorney for USCCA's Critical Response Team for Michigan, and wrote the legal presentation for USCCA's Michigan Concealed Pistol License class.

Steve is a law professor at Cooley Law School as well as running his own private practice.  Additionally, he is on the board of directors for Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners as well as their corporate counsel.  In the past, he has won civil payouts in 42 USC 1983 cases such as Haman v.
